06 avril – J18 – 27 kms – T35
Le temps est au beau pour débuter cette journée. Les températures commencent à s’adoucir peu à peu.
En milieu de matinée, nous faisons nos courses de déjeuner dans un grand supermarché sur notre chemin. Mais une fois les barquettes de sashimis, auxquelles nous n’avons pu résister, achetées, il faut les consommer rapidement. Impossible de se balader avec du poisson cru dans le sac, d’autant qu’il fait chaud. Donc à 11h, nous voilà attablés avec notre menu favori : sashimis et fraises ! De toute façon, il valait mieux se sustenter avant l’ascension au temple 35 niché dans la montagne.
Shikoku, une île où la confiance règne
Etant donné que nous redescendrons par le même chemin avant de poursuivre la route, Bernard abandonne son gros sac derrière un petit sanctuaire au bas de la montée et se charge du mien nettement moins lourd. Il semblerait qu’il n’y ait pas de voleur au Japon, tout au moins à Shikoku ! Chaque fois, que nous arrivons dans un temple, nous laissons nos sacs à l’entrée sans surveillance aucune et partons sereinement faire notre petit tour rituel. Tous les pèlerins à pied agissent ainsi. Idem, lorsqu’on fait un stop devant un magasin, les sacs restent dehors sans problème.
Quels veinards ces japonais d’avoir su, pu conserver ce climat de confiance. Dans le même esprit, au bas des chemins de montagne, on trouve souvent des bâtons de marche en bambou, mis à disposition des éventuels marcheurs qui désireraient les emprunter. Ils les remettront à leur place en redescendant. Imaginez cela en France…. De même, on trouve le long des petites routes des cahutes de bois offrant en vente libre des sacs de légumes ou de fruits. Le prix est indiqué sur le sac et une boîte tirelire est à disposition pour régler son dû. Et bien entendu, chacun respecte la consigne…
Des rencontres sympathiques
Nos rencontres du jour se succèdent :
- André, notre pote québécois (photo) retrouvé au temple 35, ainsi qu’un couple de sri-lankais qui ne semblent pas être de vaillants marcheurs, nous les retrouverons ce soir à l’hôtel, ils ont terminé la journée en taxi !
- Une dame au supermarché où nous avons fait nos courses ce matin, très admirative de savoir que nous marchions de temple en temple. J’adore rencontrer ces gens qui sont impressionnés par ce que nous faisons ! Ils ont tout à fait raison, moi aussi, je m’impressionne !
- Un couple en voiture qui nous ont offert un sandwich fort appétissant, o-settai! Malheureusement nous avons déjà déjeuné, nous en avons fait cadeau à André.
- Un vieux monsieur, venu au-devant de nous sur le chemin pour nous faire choisir des porte-bonheur trèfles à quatre feuilles de sa fabrication. En fait j’avais remarqué sa silhouette derrière une fenêtre lorsque nous marchions sur le chemin à découvert en direction de sa maison et soudain je l’avais vu disparaître, j’étais sûre qu’il nous avait repérés de loin et le voilà effectivement trottinant vers nous, un panier jaune à la main. Tout ravi de nous faire choisir parmi ces o-settai, de causer avec des « furansu-jin de Paris, Eiffel Tower ! ». Séance photos obligée ! Ils sont marrants ces vieux japonais à l’affût du henro de passage. On doit illuminer leur journée et c’est tout aussi réciproque. Lorsqu’ils disparaîtront, je doute que les nouvelles générations prennent le relai…
Et dernière rencontre du jour, devant un stand où nous venions d’acheter un petit sac de mandarines, un monsieur nous en offre un second, o-settai !
Le temple 35, Kiyotaki-ji, la Source Pure
Kukai y serait resté sept jours en prière, une source aurait alors jailli, donnant naissance à un lac paisible… Belle ascension pour l’atteindre qui se termine comme d’habitude par une volée de marches. Mais c’est la récompense assurée, on pénètre dans un écrin de verdure peuplé d’arbres en pleine explosion de fleurs. Des alignements de jizo nous accueillent. Ces petites statues coiffées d’un bonnet rouge et d’un bavoir qui sont sensés apporter fécondité et veiller sur les enfants sont omniprésentes dans les temples de Shikoku et le long de nos sentiers.
Notre ami André a fait comme nous, il a planqué son sac sur le bord du chemin avant de grimper jusqu’ici. Il nous en dévoile la cachette, ce qui nous permettra de le lester du sandwich offert par ce couple qui nous a doublés en voiture dans la descente.
Retour vers les rizières et les cultures maraîchères
Une fois dans la plaine, nous devons retraverser la ville pour retrouver le chemin qui nous conduira au temple 36. Discussion conflictuelle classique avec Bernard qui comme d’habitude dit savoir où il va malgré l’absence de notre balisage fétiche, le petit henro rouge et bien entendu, j’ose émettre quelques doutes… ce qui n’est pas du tout apprécié… nous avons encore des progrès à faire sur le chemin de la sagesse !
Nous quittons enfin la ville et retrouvons ces petites routes qui serpentent au travers des rizières et autres cultures maraîchères. Shikoku est un immense jardin potager et fruitier. Des serres à perte de vue constituent l’élément majeur du paysage de la plaine qui s’étend entre les massifs montagneux et la mer. Les plantations d’agrumes, de néfliers sont également innombrables. Et pourtant, le soir dans nos auberges, les légumes frais et les fruits sont servis au compte-goutte. Ce matin au petit-déjeuner, nous avons eu droit à une demi-fraise et une tranche d’orange ! Et c’était jour faste car d’habitude il n’y a aucun fruit. Quant aux légumes, ils sont le plus souvent en saumure et ce n’est vraiment pas ma tasse de thé.
Déjà 400 kilomètres …
Nous revoici cheminant le long d’une voie à grande circulation… Je n’y fais même plus attention, je ne râle plus, je dois avoir retenu la leçon de Sophie : je suis en mode pèlerin et non randonneur ! Je commence à comprendre la différence subtile entre ces deux types de marche. Le pèlerin va vers un but et choisit le chemin direct quel qu’il soit. Le randonneur marche à la découverte d’un paysage, la nature et le chemin se doivent d’être esthétiques.
Nous sommes tout de même soulagés de quitter le trafic routier pour gravir un superbe sentier de montagne dans une forêt de cèdres du Japon pointillée d’azalées sauvages où règne une fraîcheur délicieuse. Une belle lumière tamisée caresse les troncs de ces arbres majestueux.Au départ de la montée, des bâtons sont proposés à qui en aurait besoin.
Nous passons le col et basculons sur l’autre versant pour retrouver la côte, l’océan et notre hébergement du soir, un autre hôtel-onsen. Certes moins beau qu’hier soir mais quel plaisir de s’immerger dans ces bains chauds extérieurs. Je commence à y prendre sérieusement goût.
Nous avons franchi le cap des 400 kilomètres parcourus, un tiers de notre voyage.
Petit lexique
- furansu jin : « français » en japonais
- haruki henro : pèlerin à pied
- henro : pèlerin
- jizo : statuette représentant un Bouddha
- onsen : bain thermal chaud dont l’eau est essentiellement issue de source volcanique
- o-settai : offrande donnée aux pèlerins autant pour les honorer que pour représenter le donateur au cours du pèlerinage
- sashimi : tranches de poisson frais à consommer cru. Pas de riz içi, il est réservé au sushi.

Le 20 mars 2019, Catherine, co-fondatrice de CouleurSenior, s’engageait avec son mari dans une longue marche, le Pèlerinage de Shikoku, une île au sud du Japon. Ils ont 63 ans chacun, n’ont jamais vécu au Japon, ne parlent pas japonais, ne sont pas bouddhistes. Marcheurs réguliers, ils ne se sont jamais lancés sur une si longue distance : 1 200 km sur un circuit historique de 88 temples.
Dans cette période actuelle de confinement, Catherine nous a proposé de partager au jour le jour leur aventure, physique, culturelle et spirituelle. Exactement un an après, suivons leurs pas et découvrons avec eux cette île et le quotidien des pèlerins dans un monde inconnu.
